Buchardt Audio S400 MK3: A Major Redesign for the Danish Standmount Favorite

With a larger cabinet, new drivers and a redesigned crossover, Buchardt’s latest S400 aims to deliver bigger sound and deeper bass in one of hi-fi’s most competitive speaker categories.

Danish loudspeaker specialist Buchardt Audio has officially unveiled the Buchardt Audio S400 MK3, the newest generation of its popular standmount loudspeaker platform.

The S400 series has been one of Buchardt’s defining products since its first prototype appeared in 2016. Known for producing surprisingly large, room-filling sound from compact cabinets, the design has evolved through several iterations including the S400, S400 MKII, and S400 MKII Signature Edition.

For 2026, the company has pushed the concept further with the MK3 — a model that represents a near complete redesign rather than a simple update.

A Bigger Cabinet for Bigger Sound

One of the most noticeable changes is the larger cabinet.

The S400 MK3 increases internal volume by roughly 18 percent, giving the speaker more air to work with and improving both low-frequency extension and dynamic headroom.

Despite the increase in size, the cabinet retains the minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic that made the earlier S400 models so recognizable.

The enclosure uses 15mm moisture-resistant fiberboard with internal bracing, designed to reduce cabinet resonance while maintaining a relatively compact footprint suitable for stands or smaller rooms.

A New Tweeter with Custom Waveguide

High frequencies are handled by a newly developed 26mm aluminum dome tweeter paired with a redesigned waveguide.

Rather than emphasizing brightness, Buchardt says the new design focuses on refinement and perceived resolution.

The waveguide helps control dispersion and improve integration with the woofer, which should result in:

  • Better imaging

  • More consistent off-axis response

  • Reduced listening fatigue

The crossover point has also moved to 2400 Hz, allowing the tweeter to operate within a carefully optimized frequency range.

Larger Woofer with Greater Displacement

The S400 MK3 also introduces a 7.5-inch woofer sourced from SB Acoustics.

The driver uses the company’s Satori PAPYRUS paper cone, a material known for its balance between rigidity and natural tonal character.

Compared with the woofer used in the previous S400 MKII, the new driver offers over 65% greater displacement capability.

That extra headroom allows the speaker to:

  • Move more air

  • Deliver stronger bass impact

  • Maintain clarity at higher volumes

Combined with the larger cabinet, the result should be greater scale and authority, particularly in the lower frequencies.

A Switch from Passive Radiator to Bass Reflex Port

Earlier S400 models used a passive radiator design to reinforce bass output.

The MK3 instead adopts a rear-ported bass reflex system, allowing Buchardt to better tune low-frequency performance with the new cabinet and driver.

The ported design aims to provide:

  • Tight, extended bass

  • Greater efficiency

  • Stronger dynamic capability

Buchardt recommends leaving around 5 cm (2 inches) of space behind the speaker to ensure proper airflow from the rear port.

Simplified Crossover with Premium Components

Another major update comes in the crossover network.

Buchardt continues its collaboration with Jantzen Audio, using high-quality components throughout the signal path.

However, the MK3 adopts a simpler crossover topology, relying on first-order filters.

This design approach is often favored for its ability to preserve phase coherence and natural driver integration, although it requires careful engineering to maintain smooth frequency response.

Performance Specifications

The S400 MK3 is a two-way passive standmount speaker with the following core specifications:

  • Frequency response: 33 Hz – 20 kHz (in-room ±3 dB)

  • Sensitivity: 88 dB

  • Impedance: 4 ohms

  • Recommended power: From 30 watts and up

Dimensions have increased slightly to:

  • 392 × 198 × 280 mm (H × W × D)

  • Weight: 8.5 kg per speaker

These figures suggest the MK3 is designed to deliver serious low-frequency performance for a compact standmount speaker.

Entering a Highly Competitive Category

At $2,400 per pair, the S400 MK3 enters one of the most competitive segments in hi-fi.

It faces strong competition from brands such as:

  • KEF

  • Wharfedale

  • Paradigm

  • Acoustic Energy

What has historically set the S400 apart, however, is its reputation for producing unusually powerful bass and large soundstage from a compact cabinet, often rivaling much larger floorstanding speakers.

Pricing and Availability

The Buchardt S400 MK3 is available for pre-order directly through Buchardt Audio’s website.

Introductory pricing is:

  • $2,400 per pair (black or white finishes)

  • $2,574 per pair (real wood veneer finishes)

European pricing starts at:

  • €2,300 for painted finishes

  • €2,450 for real wood veneer

Buchardt is initially offering 75 pairs per finish at the introductory price, with deliveries expected to begin in late summer 2026.

Final Thoughts

With the S400 MK3, Buchardt Audio has taken a speaker that already had a strong reputation among audiophiles and reworked nearly every major component.

The combination of:

  • A larger cabinet

  • A more powerful woofer

  • A new waveguided tweeter

  • A simplified crossover

suggests the company is aiming to push the platform closer to floorstander-like performance while retaining the compact practicality of a bookshelf speaker.

If the final sound matches the ambitious design changes, the S400 MK3 could easily become one of the most talked-about standmount speakers in the $2,000–$3,000 range.
