Grado Signature S550 Headphones Arrive with Walnut Craftsmanship and a Warm, Relaxed Sound

The Brooklyn audio specialist expands its premium Signature lineup with a new open-back model designed for effortless, fatigue-free listening.

Headphones labeled "Grado" rest on a brown leather chair with soft daylight and plant shadows creating a relaxed mood.

American headphone maker Grado Labs has unveiled the Grado Signature S550, the newest addition to its high-end Signature Series.

Positioned as a more relaxed-sounding alternative within the lineup, the S550 aims to deliver warmth, openness and clarity while maintaining the speed and detail that have long defined the brand’s signature sound.

Expanding the Signature Series

The new S550 joins an already growing family of premium models, including the Grado Signature S950 and the flagship Grado Signature HP100 SE.

With this fourth addition, Grado continues refining a lineup designed for audiophiles seeking handcrafted materials and a distinctive open-back presentation.

While earlier Signature models leaned toward energetic detail and immediacy, the S550 takes a slightly different approach — focusing on a smoother, more laid-back listening experience intended for long sessions.

Tuned for Warmth Without Losing Detail

At the heart of the S550 is a 50mm S2 dynamic driver, developed specifically for this model.

Grado says the driver has been carefully tuned to complement the acoustic characteristics of the headphone’s wooden enclosures, helping achieve a balance between warmth and precision.

The goal is a presentation that offers:

  • Relaxed tonal balance

  • Natural openness

  • Low listening fatigue

At the same time, the company promises the headphones retain the speed and clarity associated with classic Grado designs such as the Grado SR325x and Grado GS3000x.

Brazilian Walnut Ear Cups

A defining visual feature of the S550 is its use of solid Brazilian walnut housings.

Each ear cup is individually crafted, meaning no two pairs share the same grain pattern. The result is a headphone that blends natural aesthetics with acoustic functionality.

According to Grado, walnut’s density contributes to a fuller and more balanced tonal character, while also helping maintain consistent acoustic performance over time.

Wooden housings have long been part of Grado’s design philosophy, providing both a distinctive look and a unique approach to sound tuning.

Signature Comfort and Build

The S550 continues the design language used across the Signature Series.

The headphones feature Grado’s Signature headband assembly, which integrates a flexible metal support inside a leather headband. This allows for smoother adjustment and improved long-term comfort.

Connectivity also reflects the brand’s focus on versatility.

Cable and Connections

The headphones ship with a detachable silver cable, featuring:

  • 4-pin balanced mini XLR connectors at each ear cup

  • A 3.5mm mini-jack at the source end

  • Included 6.3mm adapter for traditional hi-fi equipment

This setup makes the S550 easy to pair with portable devices as well as dedicated headphone amplifiers.

Price and Availability

The Grado Signature S550 is scheduled to launch later this month with a retail price of:

  • $995 (US)

  • £995 (UK)

Final Thoughts

With the Signature S550, Grado appears to be expanding its premium lineup in a slightly different sonic direction.

Rather than chasing maximum detail or analytical precision, the new model focuses on comfort, warmth and musical ease, all wrapped in handcrafted walnut construction.

For listeners who love the brand’s classic open-back sound but want a more relaxed and fatigue-free presentation, the S550 could become one of the most appealing additions to the Signature series yet.
