In a major shakeup for the consumer audio industry, Harman International (a Samsung subsidiary) is set to acquire Masimo’s entire consumer audio portfolio, including iconic brands like Bowers & Wilkins, Marantz, and Denon, for $350 million. The transaction is expected to close by end of 2025.

Who’s Changing Hands?

The acquisition includes all eight brands under Masimo’s consumer audio division (formerly Sound United):

  • Bowers & Wilkins

  • Marantz

  • Denon

  • Polk Audio

  • Definitive Technology

  • Classé

  • HEOS

  • Boston Acoustics

These will now join Harman’s extensive portfolio, which already includes JBL, Arcam, Mark Levinson, Revel, and AKG.

Strategic Expansion for Harman & Samsung

The move further strengthens Harman’s foothold in the fast-growing $60B+ global audio market, expanding its reach across:

  • Home audio

  • Headphones

  • Hi-fi separates

  • Car audio

“This acquisition represents a strategic step forward,” said Dave Rogers, president of Harman’s Lifestyle division. “The combined family of brands will deliver complementary audio products and offer more choices to consumers.”

Quick Recap of Recent Ownership Changes

  • 2020: Sound United acquires Bowers & Wilkins

  • 2022: Masimo acquires Sound United and its brands for $1.025 billion

  • 2025: Masimo offloads the same brands to Harman for $350 million

Despite brand handovers, product quality has remained strong, with B&W headphones and speakers earning top-tier reviews.

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

Right now, not much is expected to change immediately. Harman says it intends to integrate the acquired brands while preserving their individual identities and leveraging synergies in technology, supply chains, and R&D.

We’ll keep an eye on developments — particularly any potential shifts in product roadmaps, support, or distribution strategies.
