Chinese audio manufacturer Topping is once again pushing the limits of value with the launch of the DX5 II, a DAC, headphone amplifier, and preamp combo priced at just $299. With bold specs, extensive I/O, and visual flair via an onboard screen and VU meters, this latest desktop unit aims to offer audiophile-grade features at a price point usually reserved for entry-level gear.

Inputs & Outputs, Fully Loaded

On the input side, the DX5 II offers:

  • USB-B

  • Coaxial

  • TOSLINK (optical)

  • Bluetooth with aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, LDAC, AAC, and SBC support

On the output side:

  • Three headphone jacks on the front:

    • Balanced XLR

    • Balanced 4.4mm

    • Single-ended ¼″

  • Balanced XLR and RCA line outs on the back

  • All housed in a compact enclosure with a standard IEC power socket—no wall wart needed.

The DX5 II can feed a power amp, a pair of active speakers, or serve as an all-in-one headphone solution.

Big Power, Small Box

Thanks to Topping’s new X-Hybrid amp topology, headphone output power reaches serious levels:

  • 7600mW x2 @ 16Ω

  • 6400mW x2 @ 32Ω

  • 4300mW x2 @ 64Ω

  • 990mW x2 @ 300Ω

  • 490mW x2 @ 600Ω

This performance is made possible by a quad-channel fully balanced design, which also ensures clean signal paths and low distortion.

Dual DACs + In-House Tuning

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by dual ESS ES9039Q2M DAC chips (one per channel), with Topping’s own IV conversion stage. The USB input handles up to PCM 768kHz and DSD512, although specs for coax and TOSLINK inputs remain unconfirmed.

Visual Flair + DSP Power

Front and center is a 2″ full-color display capable of showing:

  • Input & volume level

  • Real-time spectrum analyzer

  • Classic-style VU meters

But this isn’t just cosmetic. The internal menu gives you control over a 10-band parametric EQ for precise tonal shaping. Paired desktop software lets you:

  • Import target response curves

  • Apply headphone correction (PEQ) per channel

It’s a standout feature in this price range—and ideal for users looking to dial in their ideal sound profile.

Bottom Line

With high-end DACs, massive output power, a visual display, PEQ with target curve import, and Bluetooth hi-res support—all wrapped in a sleek case—the Topping DX5 II redefines what a $299 desktop DAC/amp can offer.

Whether you're upgrading your headphone rig or building a minimalist speaker system, the DX5 II looks ready to deliver pro-level performance without the pro-level price tag.
