I recommend that you look at my review of Ampapa D1 for a more fuller picture of collaboration of Douk Audio and Ampapa. But here we have a really great product.
Why you need preamp
A product that on its own is a bit hard sell, but as a supplementary product is a must have, ofc I speak about A1 preamp, to your amp. And as with every Class D amps, these tube preamps just go so well just like butter on a jelly. Its warmth and emphasis on lower spectrum of dynamics scale, helps a more neutral and balanced class D amps, to sound more full and commanding and more musical.
Design, features and amazing versatility

Now if I can talk about looks, I know I did praise a lot its sister product amp D1, but for some reason I just don’t like that much the design here. While not ugly, I just don’t find it pleasing as D1 or Q1 products. Maybe it has just something that there is too much light now, and that switcher design I don’t like, but it does not work for me like D1 does. While it is not a badly design, it is functionally maybe I just wished a bit subtlety. But good thing you can change the lights, you can have green and orange lights, but you can also turn off the lights if they become too much for you. Something you cannot do in D1 and Q1. But not to be all negative, I do like the feeling of rotating knobs of tone controls.
But what cannot be overstated is its versatility, this is not just a tube preamp, this is a phono preamp as well, and just that this is a headphone amplifier as well. So it gets a lot of things under one hat. And all of that for just 130 dollars is what I call great value.
The tubes that you get with this preamp are JAN5654 Tubes, which are good to get stock with this preamp. But investing in some better tubes will definitely go the long way to reproduce better sound. Consider buying some PSVanes to improve the sound for cheap.
Sound Quality
But what about the sound how will I characterised it. Well on its own it is hard to tell, but I can tell you how it sounds paired with Douk Audio D1, which sounds similarly like many other similar TPA3255 amps.
Somethings to expect is that this is a tube preamp, and sonic character of tube preamp is on full display here. Accelerating the soundstage, making it more sprawling horizontally. By enhancing the lower mids and bass it opens them more, which in return expand the soundstage. This is done by more sprawling bass, whenever there is great bass like in Trip hop, or hip hop you can definitely notice how this preamp integrates in system.
It helps just open and spread more. And we all know that many class D amps are shy, they have issues with bass and treble being a bit pulled back. But not anymore. This bass is now full and commanding, and not just bass. The warm sounding preamp, where most of the character of your sound is born, will sip that in mids and little bit in treble.

It will transform your sound from clinical to more musical as rhythm will now have thump and drive. Making music just more pulsing and galloping and just fun to listen. But great thing with this new preamps is that they do that, enhances bass, but still manage to control it.
This is a big deal for me, as while I love to hear good bass, I love to hear also space around instruments, I love HIFI clarity that great gears bring. But here it just adds warmth, it does not make anything bloated, as the original transparency of class D amps remains in full effect. Maybe a tad less smidge but honestly while listening it on long run, the sound becomes so much more engaging that at first I did not even notice, it is only with on/off moments that I realised that there is a bit more transparency when the device is on its own.
But honestly I did not mind that, as to me this is how music is supposed to be listened to. And for my ultimate pleasure the vocals still remained very clear and in center, but now sounding even more present and closer to you. Which was my biggest fear coming to use this preamp.
While I don’t think this will affect the treble so much, it will not help it massively as well. For that you need to experiment with opamps, or find more brighter dacs whether that be some SMSL or Q1 from Ampapa. But it is present enough, it does not veil or hinder it. The highs go up and you can feel nicely the openness of hi hat, snares, percussions, some high notes on synths. Nothing is taken here, but it will not be the most forward and showcase treble full of details and textures.
So as you understand, the preamp is a great addon to any sonic chain. But it is more supplement that builds on foundation that is amp. It is important to understand how to mix things as mixing this you get great results, but also mixing bad could provide results that are not to your likings. Like mixing warm amps, with this might bring too veiled big sound. So think how you mix for best sonic quality in this sonic cocktails. But individual strengths of preamp are always on its own little bit hard to gauge.
Now I will go through some alternatives.

vs. Aiyima T20
One close alternative is Aiyima T20. T20 is superior preamp, with PSVane tubes already present. It is much better look wise, and have balanced architecture which this preamp does not have. It is more versatile in inputs, while A1 remains more versatile in features. Depending on what you need. Also T20 does not have tone controls, while A1 have excellent tone controls for manipulating the sound.
But sonic wise, it is amazing how much it adds warmth, but remain concise and clear. It gives even more push and pull in mid section and bass than A1. It remains very clear and adding a lot of spark in treble.
It is not that T20 destroys A1 in every aspect, but in overall picture it is just more present and better sonics, enough that it might even justify a difference in price. Yes I forgot to say that there is 100 dollar difference between them, with T20 being 230 dollars.
So yes T20 is bit sonically better, have remote and balanced architecture but is 100 dollars more. A1 have phono inputs, it have headphone amp, it have tone controls, is sonically also great, but for 100 dollars less. So as you can see there is everything for everyone here.
vs. Fosi P3
Now for cheaper you get Fosi P3, it is 50 dollars cheaper at 80 dollars. Now unless you want Bluetooth in your preamp, there is nothing here to say that can sway you to buy P3. But it is super cheap, and it provides some excellent backup by adding warmth and weight. But P3 does not have great command of micro transients like other two. It does not leave a lot of room and breath like other two. It is great for how much it costs, but add 50 dollars more and at 130 dollars you get better device.
Now if you are cost sensitive person this is a best option here. For 80 dollars your Class D amp is going to sound more fun and warmer and if that is what you want there is nothing I can say except buy it. You will 100% not regret buying this for 80 dollars.
Conclusion

To me if you have a class D amp, this is a must buy. It just makes these wonderful class D amps even better. It makes them more musical with more ground and gravitas and more masculinity.
That does not mean that it will have suddenly more bass, not it will have more drive, and rhythm, while remaining clear and present. This makes sound more fun and engaging and allowing more versatility in how you approach and listen music.
That with all other flexibility and versatility makes this an amazing device for just 130 dollars.
