When you are "new", you have to overdeliver in every aspect Kaiboer DAC-K5 review



There is a box on my desk from a company that has existed longer than most of the hi-fi brands you follow on Instagram, and until a few months ago I could not have picked its logo out of a lineup.


That is not a knock on Kaiboer. That is a knock on how the Western hi-fi press decides what counts as a "real" brand.


Shenzhen Kaiboer Technology was founded in 2007. The name is a Chinese rendering of the English word "cable," which tells you exactly where they started: HDMI leads, optical runs, silver-plated interconnects, the unglamorous plumbing of home cinema. They were one of the first companies in mainland China to push hard-disk media players into living rooms. Somewhere along the way, a cable company with a couple of hundred staff and an engineering-heavy payroll decided it wanted to build DACs instead.


And in late May 2026, that decision arrived here as the DAC-K5, asking 399 dollars.


So the obvious question. Does a company that spent nineteen years selling you the wire between your Blu-ray player and your TV have any business asking you for streaming-DAC money?


I went in fully expecting the answer to be no.

What Kaiboer Is Actually Selling You


Let us be precise about what this thing is, because the category is getting crowded and the marketing copy on every one of these boxes reads like it was generated by the same tired machine.


The DAC-K5 is a desktop all-in-one: a digital-to-analogue converter, a headphone amplifier, a preamp, and, crucially, a network streaming endpoint. Not a Bluetooth receiver pretending to be a streamer. An actual endpoint that shows up on your network and takes a handoff from your phone.


At the conversion core sit two ESS ES9039Q2M chips, one per channel, running in a dual-mono arrangement. That is the current-generation ESS part, HyperStream IV, and it is the same silicon Topping put in the DX5 II. Hold that thought, because we are coming back to it in about two thousand words and it matters more than you would think.


Kaiboer quotes native hardware decoding for PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512. There are dual femtosecond clocks, one for each sample-rate family, so the box is not resampling 44.1kHz material through a 48kHz oscillator and calling it hi-res. There is an isolated, multi-stage linear power supply rather than the switching brick you get on most gear at this end of the market.



The streaming is the whole point, and Kaiboer got it right.


Native support for TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, and DLNA. Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for the network side. Bluetooth 5.4 via a Qualcomm QCC3084 module when you want to throw something at it from a laptop that is not on your network.


There is no Ethernet port. Wireless only. Wi-Fi 6 is fast enough and stable enough that this was a non-issue for me across weeks of listening, but if you are the sort of person who runs cable to everything on principle, or your listening room is where your Wi-Fi goes to die, that omission is going to annoy you every single day.


Why does that list matter so much? Because Connect protocols mean you never touch a Kaiboer interface to play music. You open TIDAL on your phone, you tap the speaker icon, you pick the DAC-K5, and the box pulls the stream itself. Your phone becomes a remote control. Your phone can then ring, run out of battery, or go in your pocket, and the music keeps playing at full resolution.


That is the difference between a streaming DAC and a Bluetooth dongle in a nice suit. It is also the single feature that most of this product's direct competition simply does not have.


The gaps are real, though, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. There is no Roon Ready certification. There is no Qobuz Connect. There is also no parametric EQ of any kind, which in 2026 is a genuinely strange thing to leave out of a box with a four-inch screen and a Linux brain inside it. Whatever your room or your headphones are doing wrong, the DAC-K5 offers you no tools to fix it. If your library lives on Qobuz or your whole house runs on Roon, this is a much less interesting product for you, and you should stop reading and go look at something else. Kaiboer will tell you DLNA covers it. DLNA does not cover it, not in 2026, not when the competition has been certified for years.

Connectivity that assumes you own other things.


On the input side: USB (with a Kaiboer-specific Windows driver and ASIO for bit-perfect DSD), coaxial, optical, and HDMI-IIS. That last one is the tell. HDMI-IIS is not a consumer feature. It is there for people running a separate transport or a CD drive with an I2S output, and its presence says Kaiboer expects this box to sit in a real system rather than next to a laptop.


On the output side you get RCA and balanced XLR line outs, plus 6.35mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone jacks on the front.


The XLRs are a genuine feature, not a spec-sheet garnish. With the volume control engaged this thing will drive a power amplifier or a pair of active monitors directly, which quietly removes a preamp from your signal chain and a few hundred euros from your budget.



The screen is where Kaiboer spent the money.


A 4.3-inch colour display, and it is doing more than showing you a sample rate. Spectrum analyser, real-time VU meters, source and format readout, the works. Volume steps in 0.5dB, 1dB, 2dB, or 3dB increments depending on how fussy you are, adjustable from the knob or the included remote.


Is a big screen an audiophile feature? No. Absolutely not. It moves nothing about how this box sounds.


But I have spent enough years around this hobby to stop pretending that the way a piece of gear makes you feel when you walk past it at eleven at night is irrelevant. It is a glowing needle bouncing to a bassline. It is nice. Kaiboer knows it is nice. That is why it is there.

Build Quality: This Is the Part Nobody Expected


Here is where the cable company's nineteen years show up.


The chassis is a single mass of aluminium, CNC machined and anodised, and the tolerances are the kind you normally start seeing two price brackets north of here. Panel gaps are consistent all the way around. The corners are cleanly radiused rather than broken with a lazy chamfer. There is no flex anywhere, no ringing when you tap the top plate, and the whole thing sits with the dead-weight authority of something that was designed to damp itself rather than merely contain its parts.


Pick it up. Then pick up almost anything else at this money. You will feel it immediately.


The volume knob deserves its own paragraph, which is a sentence I have written maybe four times in my reviewing life. It is machined, weighted, and mounted on a shaft with no detectable wobble. It turns with an even, slightly resistant sweep and it does not click, ratchet, or feel like it is grinding against a plastic collar. Every input selection lands with a definite mechanical event rather than a mushy shrug.


The rear panel is properly laid out, with enough spacing between the XLRs and the RCAs that fat aftermarket cables do not fight each other.



So what is the catch?


Two things, and I will be blunt about both.


First, the front-panel jacks are close together. If you run a chunky 4.4mm plug and want a 6.35mm cable in at the same time, you will be doing some careful geometry.


Second, and this is the more meaningful one: fit and finish are not the same thing as thermal engineering. Under sustained load with the linear supply working, this box gets warm. Not alarming, not "unplug it," but warm enough that I would not stack anything on top of it or shove it into a closed rack cubby with no airflow. Give it some air.


None of that changes the headline. In a category where "premium build" usually means a bent steel sleeve with a thick faceplate glued to the front, the DAC-K5 is genuinely, unarguably well made. This is the single most convincing thing about the product, and it is the thing you cannot get by reading a spec sheet.

Sonic Quality: Clean, Composed, and Very Familiar


Now the part you scrolled down for.


I am going to save you some time. If you have heard an Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2, you have essentially heard the DAC-K5. The family resemblance is not subtle, and it is not a coincidence either: both are dual-ESS designs, one generation apart, wrapped in a linear supply and asked to do the same job. They land within a hair of each other, and if you dropped me into a blind test between them I would not bet money on getting it right.


That is meant as a compliment, mostly. It is also the beginning of the argument I want to have with this product later on.


So what does that shared character actually sound like?


Clean to the point of clinical, and then it relaxes.


The first thing you notice is the silence. Not the absence of hiss, which is table stakes now, but the sense that the noise floor has been pulled down beneath the music rather than sitting alongside it. Kaiboer quotes a headphone output noise floor below 3µVrms and the linear supply is doing real work here.


Put on Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and this becomes the entire story. That record is not about what is playing. It is about the enormous, humming, patient nothing between the events, and how long a note is allowed to fall into it before something else happens. The DAC-K5 holds that space open without filling it in. The harmonica entry on "I Believe In You" arrives out of genuine emptiness rather than out of a low-level grey wash, and the decay on Lee Harris's cymbals runs long and clean instead of getting truncated by the next transient.


Bass


Bass is tight, fast, and honest rather than generous. This is not a warm DAC and it is not trying to be. On Björk's Homogenic, the synthetic low end under "Jóga" arrives with proper weight and a defined leading edge, and it stays separate from the Icelandic String Octet sitting on top of it. The two elements do not smear into one another the way they can on cheaper conversion. What you do not get is that last bit of bloom and body, the sense of air being physically moved. Some listeners want that. This box does not supply it.


Massive Attack's Mezzanine is the stress test, and the DAC-K5 passes it in exactly the way you would expect: the bass on "Angel" is menacing and controlled, but slightly more sculpture than mudslide.


Midrange: accurate, articulate, and just a touch reserved.

If you want to know whether a converter can resolve micro-detail without shoving it in your face, this is where I go, and I make no apology for the cliché. The DAC-K5 gets the important things right. Scott LaFaro's bass on "Gloria's Step" is properly a melodic instrument rather than a rhythmic thud. You hear the wood. You hear Paul Motian's brushes as a texture with a beginning and an end. You hear the room, the clink of glassware, the fact that people are eating dinner while jazz history happens twelve feet away.


Voices are where I would push back slightly. On Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which is basically a record of a house being played as a percussion instrument, everything is laid out with total clarity: the dog barks, the floorboards, the wall-thumps, the way her voice is recorded so close you can hear the room boundary behind her. It is legible in a way that lesser sources cannot manage.


But there is a millimetre of distance in the presentation. A slight cool tint through the upper mids that keeps you observing the performance rather than being inside it. On Fetch the Bolt Cutters, an album whose entire currency is claustrophobic intimacy, that distance is the one thing I would change.



Treble: this is where the new ESS generation earns its keep.


Anyone who lived through the ES9038 era remembers the glare. That thin, glassy, faintly metallic sheen on massed strings and cymbals that had half the internet insisting they could hear "ESS house sound." The ES9039 generation has largely dealt with it, and the DAC-K5 is evidence.


Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda is the test I trust most here. Harp is brutal on bad treble: all attack, all overtone, nothing to hide behind. The title track's harp glissandi come through shimmering and extended, with the plucks landing as physical events, and none of that hard edge that makes you reach for the volume knob after twenty minutes. Pharoah Sanders's soprano stays reedy and human rather than turning into a laser.


Push it harder with Shostakovich's Tenth and the massed strings in the second movement stay coherent at volume, which is not a given at this price.


Staging: wide, precise, and a bit shallow.


Lateral imaging is excellent. Instruments occupy defined, stable positions and stay there. On Little Simz's Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, the string arrangements on "Introvert" spread properly wide around the beat instead of collapsing into the centre, and you can follow individual lines through the arrangement.


Depth is the compromise. The soundstage is more of a wide, well-organised front wall than a room you can walk into. Layering front to back is competent but not remarkable, and this is precisely where the significantly more expensive gear starts to justify itself.


The headphone amp is the weak link, and the spec sheet knows it.


Kaiboer calls the amplifier stage "Matrix Power" and quotes 1000mW into 16Ω from the balanced output, alongside a claimed compatibility range of 16Ω to 800Ω.


That 1000mW figure is fine. It is enough for the vast majority of real headphones, and in practice the DAC-K5 drove everything I threw at it that lives in normal impedance territory without strain, with a black background that suits sensitive IEMs.


But then the same spec sheet quotes 23mW into 800Ω, and I would like everyone to sit with that number for a moment. Twenty-three milliwatts. You are not driving a demanding high-impedance headphone with 23mW. You are gently suggesting to it that music exists. Kaiboer cannot simultaneously claim 800Ω compatibility and publish that figure and expect nobody to notice.


So: excellent with IEMs and normal dynamic cans. Perfectly good with most planars. If you own something genuinely thirsty and high-impedance, use the line outputs into a real amplifier and treat the headphone jack as a convenience.

Synergy and Pairing


A DAC this neutral is a mirror, and that cuts both ways.


With speakers. Run the XLRs straight into a power amp or a set of actives and the DAC-K5 will faithfully report whatever is downstream of it. That means it pairs beautifully with amplification that has some warmth and body in reserve, and less well with anything already leaning bright or analytical. If your amp is a lean, fast, detail-forward design and your speakers use a metal-dome tweeter, adding this DAC will not soften anything for you. It will hand you exactly what is there.


Warm-ish integrated amplifiers, valve hybrids, and speakers with a slightly relaxed presence region are the natural partners. Anything voiced toward energy and sparkle at the top will want a source with more meat on it.


With headphones. The pairing logic follows the same rule. Warm, thick, slightly dark headphones come alive on this box, because the DAC-K5 supplies the clarity and separation they need without stripping their character. Bright or aggressively tuned headphones will get brighter and more aggressive.


IEMs are a genuine strength. That low noise floor means sensitive multi-driver monitors stay properly black between notes.


In a system. The most convincing use case I found was not the desktop at all. It was as the streaming front end for an existing hi-fi: Wi-Fi in, XLR out to an integrated amp, phone as the remote, screen glowing across the room with the VU meters going. That is a genuinely elegant way to modernise a system that has good amplification and no streaming, and it costs you one box and one pair of cables.


Where it fights you. If you are a Roon household, the whole proposition falls apart. If you are a Qobuz subscriber, you are stuck with DLNA or AirPlay and you will feel the compromise. These are not sound-quality problems. They are ecosystem problems, and ecosystem problems are the ones that make you sell gear six months later.


vs. Topping DX5 II


Right. Time to be honest, because this is the section that actually decides whether you should buy this.


The Topping DX5 II costs 299 dollars. The Kaiboer costs 399. One hundred dollars between them, and the same dual ES9039Q2M conversion core sitting inside both. On raw engineering-per-euro, it is not close.


Look at the numbers side by side and it becomes slightly uncomfortable. Topping's X-Hybrid amplifier stage delivers 7600mW per channel into 16Ω, 990mW into 300Ω, and 490mW into 600Ω. The Kaiboer manages 1000mW into 16Ω and, by its own admission, 23mW into 800Ω. That is not a small gap. That is a different class of headphone amplifier bolted to the same DAC chips.


Topping also quotes 133dB SNR and dynamic range with THD+N below 0.00006%, gives you a proper 10-band parametric EQ with importable and exportable curves, adds a 4-pin XLR headphone output alongside the 6.35mm and 4.4mm, includes preamp mode with per-input volume memory, throws in 12V trigger in and out, and supports LDAC over Bluetooth.


The Kaiboer, remember, has no EQ at all. Not ten bands. Not five. None.


Pound for pound, euro for euro, the Topping delivers more. I am not going to dress that up. If your priority is measured performance and headphone driving power per unit of currency, the DX5 II wins and it is not a debate.


So why is the Kaiboer still on my desk?


Three reasons, and they are not small ones.


Build quality. The DX5 II is a well-made small box. The DAC-K5 is a genuinely premium-feeling piece of industrial design. The machining, the mass, the knob, the panel work, the way it occupies space on a rack. In person, in your hands, this is not a marginal difference. It is the difference between a component and an accessory.


The screen. Topping's 2-inch Aurora display is clear and configurable and perfectly adequate. Kaiboer's 4.3-inch panel is more than twice the size, with a proper spectrum analyser and VU meters you can actually read from a listening seat rather than from arm's length at a desk. If this box is going in a rack across the room rather than under your monitor, that gap goes from "nice" to "decisive."


Streaming, and this is the big one. The Topping DX5 II is not a streamer. It has Bluetooth. That is it. No Wi-Fi, no network endpoint, no TIDAL Connect, no Spotify Connect, no AirPlay 2.


To make a DX5 II stream, you buy a second box. And here is where that hundred-dollar gap stops looking like a gap at all. The cheapest streamer worth putting in front of a DAC like this costs more than a hundred dollars, needs its own shelf space, its own power outlet, and its own cable, and now you own two devices, two remotes, and two firmware update cycles instead of one.


Framed that way, Kaiboer is charging you a hundred dollars for a network endpoint, a chassis upgrade, and a screen twice the size. That is not a bad hundred dollars.


The DAC-K5 does it natively, at full resolution, with your phone as a remote and no second box on the shelf.



vs. Wiim Ultra


The rest of the field. The WiiM Ultra is the one everybody is going to throw at me in the comments, so let us deal with it properly. It costs 349 dollars. It has a touchscreen, Ethernet, room correction, EQ, phono input, HDMI ARC, Chromecast, Alexa, and a headphone jack. On a feature checklist it does not just beat the Kaiboer, it laps it, and it does so while costing fifty dollars less. As a digital hub, as a Swiss army knife, as the thing you buy when you want one box to solve nine problems, the WiiM is remarkable and I have recommended it to people many times.


But look at what is actually doing the conversion.


The WiiM Ultra runs a single ES9038Q2M, previous-generation HyperStream II silicon, topping out at 32-bit/384kHz, with a TPA6120A2 on headphone duty. The Kaiboer runs two ES9039Q2M chips in dual mono, current-generation HyperStream IV, fed by an isolated multi-stage linear supply, with dual femtosecond clocks and native DSD512.


That is not a marketing difference. You can hear it.


Put the two on the same amplifier, same speakers, same track, and the DAC-K5 is the more resolved and better-organised converter. The noise floor sits lower. Instrumental separation holds together when the arrangement gets busy, where the WiiM starts to congeal slightly. Treble is cleaner and less brittle, which is the ES9039 generation doing exactly what it was designed to do. Bass has better definition on the leading edge. Go back to the Talk Talk record and the silence is simply blacker on the Kaiboer, and on Journey in Satchidananda the harp overtones hang on longer before the noise floor swallows them.


And honestly? This is the argument that matters. We are talking about a streaming DAC. Streaming is the delivery mechanism. The DAC is the product. Every feature on the WiiM's spec sheet is in service of getting a signal to a conversion stage, and if that conversion stage is the weaker of the two, all the room correction in the world is polish on a lesser foundation.


So the honest verdict is a split one. If you want the most capability per euro, buy the WiiM Ultra and you will be very happy. If you are buying a streaming DAC to be a DAC first, the Kaiboer is the better-sounding machine, and the fifty dollars is well spent.

Conclusion


I came into this expecting a cable company's vanity project, and that is not what showed up.


The Kaiboer DAC-K5 is a legitimately good piece of hardware at 399 dollars. The chassis is the best-made thing in its price bracket that I have handled this year. The screen is genuinely excellent. The streaming implementation is complete in the ways that matter day to day, with TIDAL Connect and Spotify Connect and AirPlay 2 all working the way they should. And the sound is clean, quiet, precise, and sits within touching distance of a streaming DAC that costs more than twice as much.


But I am not going to sell you a fantasy. The Topping DX5 II gives you more measured performance and dramatically more headphone power for a hundred dollars less, and if that is your yardstick, buy the Topping and enjoy it. The headphone stage here is the weakest part of the design, and Kaiboer's own 800Ω figure is an own goal. There is no Ethernet. There is no EQ. There is no Roon, and there is no Qobuz Connect. The presentation is a touch cool and a touch shallow front to back.


So who is this for?


It is for the person who has good amplification and good speakers already, who wants to add proper network streaming without adding a second box, who has Wi-Fi they actually trust, who is going to look at this thing every day and wants it to feel like a real hi-fi component instead of a black brick, and who plays their music through TIDAL or Spotify like a normal human being.


It is also, more simply, for the person who understands what they are buying. This is a streaming DAC. The streaming is how the music arrives. The DAC is the reason you are spending the money. Cheaper boxes will hand you more features and more flexibility, and if that is what you are shopping for, go and buy them with my blessing. But on the one job the category is named after, the DAC-K5 is the better performer, and it is not particularly close.


If that is you, at 399 dollars, this is a very easy recommendation.


If you want the most performance per euro and you do not care what it looks like, the Topping is sitting right there, and it is cheaper, and it is better at the specific job of driving headphones.


Both of those things are true at the same time. That is usually how it goes.


Nineteen years of making cables, and Kaiboer built something worth listening to on the first serious try. I did not expect to write that sentence. I am glad I get to
